One sofa, saved from landfill

Why one owner chose to recover instead of buying new

Most sofas wear out within a few years, sent to landfill as waste, then replaced. A King Living sofa is designed to be different. Built to be kept, and passed down for generations. Buy well once, and you rarely buy again. So when Kyle Williams' sofa was ready for a refresh after sixteen years, he looked at buying new, but chose to recover it instead.

We sat down with him to hear why.

Something worth keeping

In 2010, Kyle brought home a King sofa, the Pronto, for his Freshwater beach house. Positioned in the quiet front room, it's still where he reads, winds down and falls asleep in front of the fire. "It's my getaway," he says.

Over the years, his three daughters grew up in the house, and two have since left home. The sofa never moved.

"As they got older, the kids took up more space in the other lounge room. Where this sofa sits, is a retreat. It’s just such a comfortable couch. It’s become somewhere to get away from the noise for a bit.”

So when the time came for a refresh, letting it go was never going to be simple.

Considering buying new

Sixteen years of use leaves its mark. Kyle's sofa had been through the rough and tumble of family life and a couple of pets, and he considered starting again. He did what many would do, and went looking at what else was out there.

What he found was fast furniture that didn’t suit his home.

"We went and had a look at cheaper, the usual high-street names. Nothing hit the spot. The fabric, the shape, the design of this sofa, it just fits the house. We couldn't find anything good enough to replace it.”

Designed to feel timeless, King sofas adapt to any style or space. For the relaxed character of his beach house, that mattered to Kyle.

"A lot of what we saw was very modern and contemporary. This design was simple. It just suited the place."

Replace covers. Not sofas.

His mind was made up. Rather than send the sofa he loved to landfill, Kyle chose to recover it through King-Care®, the service that professionally cleans, repairs and refurbishes a King sofa for as long as it's in your home.

The process is simple. King Living sofas are made with removable, replaceable covers, so when fabric is worn or you’re ready for a change, the sofa is recovered rather than replaced. Some of the oldest King sofas, made back in the seventies, have been renewed and sent home five decades later.

The design underneath doesn't change. Sixteen years on, Kyle's King Steel Frame was as strong as ever, backed by its 25-year warranty.

From the first call to the final delivery, the recovering was handled. “The process was good," Kyle says. "The team who picked it up and dropped it off were terrific, and everyone who handled it along the way was responsive."

Built for generations, not landfill

The most sustainable sofa is one you keep. While Kyle's decision to recover seems like a small decision, it’s one that comes with big impact.

According to the Australian Furniture Association, Australians discard 30,000 tonnes of commercial furniture annually, with 95% of this ending up in landfill. But some sources suggest the true scale is far greater. The furniture sent to Sydney's landfills alone is estimated to equal 800,000 three-seater sofas every year.

A sofa you can recover answers both. A stand against fast furniture, and a step towards circularity. For Kyle, it comes back to a buy once buy well philosophy.

“We have a bit of a motto that you buy something, you buy something that's right. King is well engineered, and it lasts. There’s reputation well earned. Long after the price is forgotten, the quality is remembered, and that's what we've got."

It's the same logic he applies across his home.

"We do the same with our white goods. We buy better quality, because we don't want them breaking down. You pay a bit more, but you get a bit more. It’s worth it.

A new chapter

In 2026, the sofa he loved was returned to the room it had always lived in, refreshed. New fabric, same frame, same spot by the fire. A design that fits his home exactly as it did before. For Kyle, the waiting was the hardest part.

“We just wanted it back. When we got it, it affirmed our decision. It’s the right one for that spot. And virtually brand new. It looks great, and it's still really comfy."

But it was never only about the sofa. "Maybe as you get older, you just don't like change," he says, laughing. And it isn't only Kyle. This is the sofa his daughters grew up on, his pets slept on, the sofa his family and friends know. It isn't just a sofa, but the moments shared there together. Keeping it meant keeping all those memories too.

He's looking forward now, not back. "And now, 15 years later, we're going to get another 15 years out of it."

Some things are worth keeping. Kyle's retreat is one of them.
